In practice

Hyaluronic acid draws water into the upper layers of skin but does not hold it there on its own. Without an occlusive or emollient over the top, that water is free to evaporate, and in a dry environment this can leave skin feeling tighter than before. Applying a moisturiser on top is what makes this class of ingredient work.
